This presentation reports on the first phases of experimentation carried out to investigate possible application of Cyclododecane (CCD). This product, unusual in comparison to those customarily employed in conservation, has been used with success since 1995, for various phases of restoration on a wide range of art objects. The chemical formula of cyclododecane, C12H24, clearly indicates that it is not a commercial formulation, whose components often remain mysterious, neither is it a polymer or a complex natural substance; rather it is a molecule. The specific characteristics and behavior, and the numerous applications of cyclododecane in the field of conservation of art objects, have been widely described and debated in the articles cited in the bibliography. In summary, they are connected to the following main characteristics of the material: insolubility in water, ability to sublimate at room temperature, solubility in non-polar organic solvents, low toxicity for man.
