Abstract
This paper describes engineering tests suitable for measuring the adhesion, flexibility and fracture of paint films, textiles and adhesives. The level of complexity required of a test sample to adequately represent a real painting is discussed in relation to the need to obtain accurate, reproducible data. Examples are given from experiments designed to gain an understanding on interlaminar interactions within paintings.
