Abstract
The suitability of organic coating materials as protection for silver artefacts in indoor environments was examined; results for eight coatings are reported here. Sterling silver coupons and glass slides were coated and subjected to a high-sulphide environment until the coupons were severely tarnished. Before, during, and after exposure gloss measurements and visual observations were made, and photographs were taken; thickness measurements were taken before exposure. Of the coatings tested, Agateen [Registered] Air Dry Lacquer #27, Acrysol [Registered] WS-24, and PVAc AYAT performed the best, and Renaissance Wax was least effective. The other coatings, including HMG Heat and Waterproof Adhesive, Acryloid [Registered] B-48N, and polyvinyl butyral resins, retarded tarnish to varying degrees. Results show that thickness is a significant variable in coating performance.
