Abstract
A report on the controversy surrounding the 13-year project to clean the Sistine chapel frescoes. Opponents of the project decry the colours and worry about the effects of the solvent ab 57. Six leading conservators, however, defend the restoration. Michelangelo's fresco technique, the traditional buon fresco , did not include the use of glue sizing or secco washes. Photographs.
