Abstract
The number of metal sculptures exhibited in the open air has increased rapidly over the past decades. Many new materials have been introduced, making the development of new methods of protection a necessity. Many phenomena of decay such as the breakdown of aluminum, or the rusting of CORTEN-steel have to be analyzed before solutions for preservation can be found. The same problems occur with the use of coatings that are not sufficiently tested before their application can be recommended in all cases.
