The term alpine marble refers to a variety of red and grey coarse-grained limestones, in widespread use north and south of the Alps. The limestones are characterized by layers of clay from which weathering starts. The church tower of Schwaz, Tyrol, exemplifies the damage that occurs to this type of stone. Sulfur dioxide in polluted air is held responsible for the decay. The treatment proposed is to close the surface to prevent further penetration of water. To close small cracks, Paraloid B-72 and a silicon resin dissolved in a mixture of solvents is proposed. Larger cracks are filled with a mixture of an acrylic dispersion (Primal AC33) with powdered stone. -- AATA
