Abstract
The manufacture of golden bracteates is discussed. One theory presented holds that they are produced under pressure in clay molds, which is based upon the observation that there are so many types of these coins that it is unlikely they were produced in hard molds, such as metal molds. Other authors discuss the use of ivory and wood as materials for the dies. The surface features of the coins are discussed in detail, in order to determine the most probable material used for the molds into which the gold sheet was hammered. -- AATA
