Abstract
This paper relates a series of experiments designed to elucidate the succession of microorganisms on painted surfaces and the interrelationships of these microorganisms. Evidence is given to support the conclusion that bacteria are the earliest colonizers or settlers on painted surfaces. Bacterial capsules appear to enhance the settlement of fungi and their continued growth. Evidence is given in support of the hypothesis that bacteria biologically condition painted surfaces and through extracellular enzymes convert paint components to fungal metabolites. -- AATA
