Abstract
A 96-hour treatment with PEG 1,000 reduced tangential and volumetric shrinkage in the oak blocks by about 65 percent and radial shrinkage by 68 percent. Longer treatments reduced shrinkage even more, but not sufficiently to be of practical significance. Warping of blocks was inconsequential after 96 hours of treatment. Checking was restricted to the hairline variety but occurred independently of treatment length. The untreated control blocks and the blocks treated the longest had the most checks at a low moisture level. The weight of PEG absorbed, relative to the dry weight of the wood, continued to increase up to 384 hours of treatment but at a rapidly declining rate. The blocks absorbed PEG in amounts equivalent to 44 percent of their dry weight after 96 hours and only an additional 14 percent in 288 more hours. -- AATA
