An iconographic, historical and technological study of two Italian Majolica plates at the Museum Ariana dating to about 1620- 30 from Montelupo in Tuscany. They depict bravacci --colorful, adventurous bandits that roamed Tuscany between 1550 and 1650. A detailed description of the characters (in cartoon-like style) includes their costumes, the colors and the landscape background as well as the glaze and texture. This is followed by general comments about the ceramics of Montelupo and a brief overview of the ceramic production of the period in other areas of Italy. The generally ironic style of the subject is linked to the poetry of that period in Tuscany. The use of the material, the traditional theme, the skill of the artisan representing a regional repertoire all make these two plates highly appreciated examples of their genre. In describing the restoration of the plates, great emphasis is put on conserving the original character of the pieces avoiding any appearance of newness. This required a very careful technical analyses of the materials used in the original. This entry also includes an analyses of glazes and colors used by various producers of Majolica involving contents of such ingredients such as tin and lead. The results are shown in a series of charts and diagrams illustrating the extent of the research.
