The Library of Congress is interested in optical disc technology for the following reasons: a) they want to check into the preservation aspect of the disc pertaining to the storage of audio, black and white as well as color motion pictures; b) they want to investigate the potential of the disc to serve the needs of the staff and patrons of the Library; and c) to investigate the increase in storage density made possible by this technology. There are five basic attractions of the disc. One is the random access feature; two, the possibility of long time storage of color materials without special environmental concerns; three the same disc can be used for reference service to patrons; four, the disc system used is the same NTSC standard that is used in the home; and five, replication of the disc is fairly inexpensive.
