Phosphine has been used for the fumigation of an ever increasing range of commodities in recent years. It has the advantage of requiring no equipment for application, making it more suitable for use in up-country stations. In addition it has been shown to leave no permanent residue on a wide variety of foodstuffs. For these reasons it was considered that it would be useful for emergency fumigation of small infested parcels in up- country stores. This experiment was conducted to ensure there was no taint to the cocoa bean as to taste before embarking on a full scale trial fumigation. It was also conducted to confirm that no permanent toxic residue was left on the bean, and that it would shed some light on the effectiveness of phosphine, in controlling normal pests of cocoa. The experiment was considered successful.
