A review is presented of recent work on the alkaline degradation mono-and polysaccharide derivatives which are structurally similar to oxidized cellulose. The importance of s-alkoxycarbonyl elimination reaction is emphasized, and it is shown how such a reaction explains the occurrence of a chain scission reaction alkali-treated oxidized cellulose, as well as the formation several of the acidic products.
