Six years ago, a group of professional conservators-restorers, in response to the growing development of the conservation-restoration throughout the world, and to the increasing number of conservation-restoration professionals graduating from universities in our country, proposed the idea of organizing themselves creating an association that could gather them around common goals. The idea was proposed during the First Congress of Conservation and Restoration, in August 2001, but no concrete actions followed, for lack of an organized group that could promote and develop it. In 2004, a group of graduates of the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, retook this initiative and invited conservator-restorers from all over the country to develop it. After two years, the work of a coordination committee and with the support and collaboration of professionals from a variety of backgrounds in conservation-restoration, the Chilean Guild Association of Conservator-Restorers (AGCR) was created, with official governmental recognition. This article describes the process of creating this organization and defining its goals and objectives.
