Abstract
The isotope signatures of carbon, nitrogen, strontium, and lead have been used to characterize elephant populations in South Africa and Namibia. For these populations, complete distinction is possible using the stable isotopes of nitrogen and strontium. The authors suggest that for further populations, additional data for lead, carbon, and possibly sulfur would be necessary for characterization.
