Abstract
To meet the special requirements of polychrome pottery and mural paintings of a Tang Dynasty tomb, suitable conservation materials were investigated for consolidation and surface protection. The composition of pigments was analyzed by X - ray fluorescence spectrometer and spectrophotometer. Solutions of 2% B72 and modified B72 were selected for increasing the adherence of pigments. The paint bonding ability, water resistance, acid and alkali resistance of pigments were tested after treatment. The color changes and adhesive strength were investigated by using a spectrophotometer and adhesive - strength testing apparatus, respectively, after photo - irradiation. The results indicated that the pigments were red lead, a mixture of red lead and vermilion, hematite and malachite. The adhesion, water resistance, and acid and alkali resistance of pigments were enhanced after the treatment. Furthermore, the protective effect of modified B72 was higher than that of B72; after irradiation, the change of absorbance maximum, color purity and brightness were smaller for pigments protected by modified B72 than by B72, and the adhesive strength of modified B72 is almost 3 times of that of B72. In conclusion, B72, modified by addition of a UV absorbefacient, had improved consolidation and protective effects for these polychrome relics and therefore, represents a significant advance in the development of conservation materials of this kind.
