Since 2001 the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (NGA) has been involved in a collaborative research project with the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) to develop a durable black matte paint for use on outdoor sculpture. An earlier stage of this research was presented at the 2002 ICOM-CC meeting. At that time we reported on the comparative durability of nine commercially available matte outdoor paints and introduced plans to adapt an existing US military camouflage coating for outdoor sculpture. This paper provides the awaited update that includes development of a series of four black paints, in a range of gloss, based on the patented military coatings. In addition, it reports on successful repainting of four outdoor sculptures.
