Today more than ever, discussions on contemporary artworks conservation practices raise several issues. Cesare Brandi’s Theory of Restoration of 1963 greatly influenced conservation policies. Yet, a well-identified set of policies needs to be agreed. Although Brandi’s theory was not originally proposed for contemporary art, it may be applied by analogy to some of the basic categories of 20th Century art: time, materials and originality. Risks of misinterpretation and distortion may be limited through information provided by artists on artworks timeframe, completeness and repeatability integrated by Brandi’s theory.
