Abstract
The author stresses the use of leather analysis when determining the cause of the deterioration of leather bookbindings and leather objects and when deciding a course of action to prevent further deterioration. The structure and chemistry of skin and the physical and chemical changes resulting from the tanning process are discussed. Special consideration is given to oxidation of tannins.
