Article describes the history and methods of production of cochineal as a dye, beginning with its use by Indians in the New World. Aside from its widespread use in the European textile industry, artists such as Sir Joshua Reynolds and J.M.W. Turner experimented with cochineal in their paintings as well. -- AATA
