Abstract
The aim of treating wet archaeological leather is to stabilize it chemically and physically while maintaining the leather's appearance and flexibility. Results of any treatment depend on the quality of the original leather, its tannage and usage, the leather's burial conditions, and its storage between excavation and conservation. Treatment of wet archaeological leather involves cleaning and conserving, the principles and methods of which are listed and discussed. Conservation methods are divided into two groups: those that replace water with a lubrication material which fills the spaces between the collagen fibers thus preventing their collapse; and those methods which first dehydrate the leather in an organic solvent before impregnation. Dehydration methods are considered to be preferable, reducing shrinkage and stiffness of the leather and enabling impregnants to be introduced as organic solvent solutions.
