Discussed are pros and cons of dry-mounting photographic prints as well as how to do it. The conservator's point of view is discussed. Mentioned is the view of photographic chemist Walter Clark, now specializing in preservation, who favors dry mounting fiber-base prints because the dry mounting tissue acts as a barrier against chemical contamination from behind the print. Points raised by Henry Wilhelm, researcher in photographic preservation, are discussed, including a dry-mounted print can't be re-fixed or re-washed; dry-mounted prints are more subject to breakage in handling; the long-term chemical effects of current dry mounting materials are unknown, and the back of a dry-mounted print cannot be seen to look for a signature, notes, etc.
