In 1957, a theory was proposed that connected Young's modulus of paper to the characteristics and density of the hydrogen bonds within and between cellulosic fibers. Since then, the theory has been improved and extended. Recently, a new, rigorous derivation has been developed that discards the arbitrary assumptions and parameters used previously. The theory is founded on four axioms. Each axiom is examined for its validity.
