Abstract
An overview of the use of inorganic pigments in coatings and plastics discusses the important properties of pigments (i.e., optical, protective, and reinforcing) and how they affect the performance of coatings and plastics. The influence of particle size distribution on tinting strength of TiO<sub>2</sub> pigments and on dominant wavelength is examined. Photochemical reactions at the TiO<sub>2</sub> surface and the degradation processes during weathering of TiO<sub>2</sub> pigmented binders (chalking) are presented. Aftertreated rutile pigments cause an efficient protection against degradation of the organic matrix. Good interaction between pigment and binder brings abouta marked improvement in strengthening qualities as well as the overall properties of pigmented plastics. -- AATA
