Abstract
The painting was in poor condition. The glazing layer had almost gone, some of the paint layers were badly cracked and there was serious bitumen cracking in some areas. The painting had also suffered considerable overpainting. This cracking allowed adequate visual and microscopic examination of the paint layers but sections were made for verification. Based on this examination, the author reconstructs how Reynolds painted this portrait.
