Many analyses of archaeological objects have little value to the modern scholar because insufficient information about the objects and analytical procedures are given. In brief the information required in a published report should cover: (1) Description of the object covering provenance, attribution and location at time of the report. (2) Location on the object of the source of sample or site of non-destructive examination. (3) Method of sampling and character of the sample. (4) Estimated depth from which portion of sample actually used for analysis was withdrawn. (5) Nature of preparation of the sample. (6) Details of the method of analysis including size of sample used and the number of replicates. (7) Number of separate analyses made. (8) Estimated precision and accuracy stated as standard deviation of the method with a note on how it is estimated.
