From the Carrara Symposium (1983), this document on the properties and deterioration of marble reviews the measures which have been taken throughout history to reinforce marble. They include the application of beeswax, silicons, and acrylic resin. According to the author the best approach is to conduct laboratory tests and to give preference to preventive measures. A committee for the standardization of surveys and stone restoration will provide for better future results.
