Within the framework of a broad international cooperation program which began in the 1950's, benefitting developing countries, Tanzania was one of nine countries which received special financial aid from Norway in 1983. This country had requested aid to set up a conservation training center in Bagamayo, to restore the city of Zanzibar and a number of classed monuments in Dar es Salaam. The Norwegians, among other things, proposed that qualified Tanzanian personnel be trained to conduct conservation work in Norway. This, the first project, became a reality in the summer of 1984. -- AATA
