Abstract
The conservation programme developed for plastics and rubber items in collections at the National Cinema Museum in Torino is described. Constituents of set objects from classical science fiction movies have been identified using a diagnostic campaign based on pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Many of the plastics objects showed serious signs of degradation, soiling, loss of paint, discoloured repair materials, structural cracks and lacunae. A dramatic change of brilliant original colours was also observed. Appropriate procedure and materials were applied during restoration. Microclimate control was developed for the display cases; resulting data from one year are discussed. The entire collection, partially made of synthetic polymers, represents some of the most challenging work for conservators. -- SCMRE
