Abstract
Studies on the effects of Nd:YAG laser energy, at three wavelengths (1064 nm, 532 nm, and 355 nm) and Er:YAG laser energy at 2940 nm, on pure epoxy resins and epoxies with fillers were performed. The tests investigated possibilities for using lasers to remove epoxy resins from art objects. Two epoxy resins, Hxtal NYL-1 and Araldite AY103 with hardener HY991, were prepared as pure films as well as in mixtures with chalk, titanium dioxide pigment, glass microballoons and charcoal. These materials were applied to different stone, ceramic and glass substrates. The tests have shown that all tested wavelengths of laser light had effects on the epoxy resins. These effects were visible primarily as discolorations and etched surfaces. Different laser wavelengths induced different physical and chemical alterations to the epoxy resins. This is probably due to subtle changes in the cleaning mechanisms induced by exposure to longer or shorter wavelengths of light.
