Abstract
The photochemical stability of films of urea-aldehyde resins, manufactured by BASF and sold under the trade name Laropal [registered mark] A, was investigated. Due to their low molecular weight, stability and solubility in solvents of relatively low polarity, these resins can be used in many applications, for example for varnishing and retouching. The properties of two commercially available resins, Laropal [registered mark] A 81 and Laropal [registered mark] A 101, were compared to those of an earlier tested experimental aldehyde resin, also obtained from BASF. Films prepared from these resins were aged in a xenon-arc Weather-ometer. Films containing a hindered amine light stabilizer were also aged. The resins proved stable as demonstrated by solvent removability tests, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography. For optimum stability the addition of a stabilizer is recommended. -- SCMRE
