The Getty Conservation Institute may be an unknown entity to some and, as part of a California operating trust, it has the unique feature among conservation research and training organizations of being self-funded and, to the extent it wishes to be, self-sufficient. Therefore, the Institute will be briefly described, its current research agenda outlined and its perceptions of current and future needs discussed.
