The authors report on their visit to Russia in September 1987, and especially on observing sturgeon glue or isinglass being used at the Grabar Art Restoration Center, Moscow, in the traditional manner, described here at length for the treatment of icons. They also visited the All-Union Research Institute for Restoration and were shown methods for use of sturgeon glue as a consolidant for badly damaged pastel paintings on paper; their other visits were to paper conservation laboratories and workshops whose work is summarily presented.
