Abstract
The sgraffiti decorating the Art Nouveau facade of painter Paul Cauchie's house dates to 1905. The original technique of execution is detailed. The first coating applied on brick masonry included lime, ash, sand, and animal hair. The second coating, a whitewash, was scraped away to outline the design and painted. The state of conservation of the primary coating was analyzed and the lack of a sufficient amount of lime, tied to temperature extremes and water infiltration, deemed responsible for its degraded state. A treatment of consolidation was considered appropriate (Paraloid B-72, 5% solution in xylene) but rejected after it failed. The primary coating was replaced after deposition of large areas of the painted surface, which were then relocated according to the method described.
