Holding maintenance is the term used by the National Archives to refer to a range of basic preservation procedures designed to prolong the life of archival records by providing a stable storage environment. This Technical Information Paper defines procedures to be followed in conducting holding maintenance. It conveys information about appropriate action to be taken involving oversize records, folded and rolled documents, damaged records, fastened documents, bound volumes, scrapbooks and albums, photographs, and unstable copies. Techniques for housing, flattening, dusting, and safely unfastening records are discussed, and the supplies needed to implement these techniques are described.
