Abstract
Describes the preliminary tests of materials and the actual packing procedure for moving Michelangelo's >Pieta from the Vatican to the New York World's Fair, 1964-1965. The marble statue was packed in a single woodem crate lined with molded Dylite slabs of foamed polystyrene (Sinclair-Koppers, Monaca, Pennsylvania). Compressed expanded-polystyrene beads (Dylite) served as the inner packing in contact with the statue. The wooden crate was in turn set in a steel container cushioned with slabs of polystyrene foam.
