Abstract
The Greek amphorae were multi-purpose as well as cheap transport containers for liquid and other substances which were easily poured. The wide distribution of certain types permits conclusions on the importance of the sea-trade of that time. The various production sites can be distinguished by the different sizes and shapes of the amphorae as well as by stamps applied to the upper part of a handle. Both the shape and the illustration of each stamp may indicate a local assignment and may be useful in dating.
