The principles of luminescence autoradiography are summarized: irradiation of the sample by ionizing radiation, excitation of the quartz ingredients to the luminescence, and local registration of luminescence intensity. The application of this technique to silica ceramics yielded distinct differences in the order and distribution of the quartz grains between 3000-year old artifacts and modern forgeries.
