Dangers associated with the use of polyethylene glycol in relining due to possible solvent action on the paint film and varnish are demonstrated. The formula of Althöfer (Abstract No. 44) is said to lack the hardness and flexibility of traditional wax-resin mixtures. When excess wax was removed from the front of a painting with water after the painting was lined with a mixture of Carbowax 12000, Carbowax 1000 and resin, the varnish was also removed. The paint was increasingly sensitive to organic solvents when compared to unlined controls. (cf. Also Abstract No. 49).
