Abstract
A very detailed technical examination was made of this picture for the purpose of studying the technique of the artist. The instrument mainly employed was the stereoscopic binocular microscope, but X-ray photography, chemical microscopy and paint cross-sections provided additional information. A large number of the results obtained are presented in a tabular form. For each area of the picture and each type of paint a description is given of the superimposed layers used to produce the final effect. The picture in question was especially suitable for this type of study because it was in some parts unfinished and in other parts abraded so that under layers were visible.
