An overview of the carpetmakers of Western Anatolia, from 1750 to 1914, is presented, based on Ottoman archives in Istanbul, 19th century art books, travel books, and reports sponsored by the government during the early Turkish republic in an effort to assist the industry. Western demand for Turkish carpets was the critical force behind changes in production and distribution, which, in turn, influenced the lives of the carpetmakers. -- AATA
