Abstract
The traditional process used to produce tapa in Tonga, an Island in the South Pacific, is described. Tapa is made from paper mulberry bark. A template, on which a pattern is embroidered in relief, is used during printing with reddish brown koka dyes. The function of tapa in Tongan society is explored, noting the changes which have occurred historically in its production. -- AATA
