In September 1991, a conference in Lomé, Togo, brought together 120 participants, museum professions from 40 African countries, as well as from Europe and North America. They examined the issues stemming from current and future needs of African museums, i.e., museum management, training, conservation and exchange of cultural heritage, research, contemporary culture, and the museum as a tool for development.
