Initial treatment involved consolidation of areas where tesserae did not adhere, using Paraloid B-72, followed by thorough cleaning and the application of a thin layer of mortar for temporary reinforcement. The more fragile areas were coated with thin strips of Japanese paper and acrylic resin in solution (Paraloid B-72 in nitro thinner at 15%). The subsidences were treated as well with equal parts vinyl resin (Vinavil NPC, 3:1 in water) and acrylic resin (Primal AC33 also 3:1 in water). The whole surface was then faced with two layers of cotton gauze and two of hemp cloth using the same acrylic resin. The cloth layers overlapped the surface of the mosaic for easier maneuverability when rolling it on the drum.
