Fine blast devices have been used in conservation for some time now. The authors ran tests to find suitable blast grains and to select the required pressure and vibration level for optimal results. The fine blast method was used for the removal of layers of oil paint from the rear side of an oil painting on canvas, of varnish, and of overpainting of a putto fragment. The results indicate that fine blast devices do an excellent job. However, they should not be employed universally, but only as an alternative to traditional methods. Especially suited for this measure are objects with an elastic ground and a brittle surface, e.g., 19th-century paintings. It is important to note that there are dangers involved in the use of fine blast devices and that their use demands considerable experience and sensitivity.
