Abstract
Around the turn of the century, galvanoplastic funerary statues were erected in the cemeteries of nearly all European cities. The manufacturing center of these mass-produced industrial works of art was the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) in Geislingen, Stuttgart. Once very widespread, they have dwindled considerably in number and are acutely endangered due to damage caused by their mode of manufacture. Most of these statues were made according to the core galvanoplastic process, i.e., a thick layer of copper was galvanically applied to an impregnated plaster core, modeled, and patinated. As a source of damage, this plaster core presents the most difficulties in conservation. The article describes two methods of restoration. In one, the core was practically completely removed, because it was so badly damaged, and an interior support was constructed. In the other, the core was consolidated with araldite and the rusting iron underwent anticorrosive treatment.
