There are many ways of cleaning and conserving silver. Silver tarnishes when a layer of sulfide forms on the surface due to the influence of environmental factors, sulfur in the atmosphere, dust, etc. Depending on the nature of the alloy, the ornamentation on the surface, flaws in the silver, the composition of the air, and use, a layer of tarnish forms more or less regularly. As part of a series of examinations, previously untreated Baroque silver appliqué work was cleaned using various methods. First, the traditional means, such as the soapwort root decoctions, were studied. Then manufactured products were tested; polishing pastes and polish cloths scour the silver surface, silver baths create an unnaturally bright, shiny surface within seconds. The use of ultrasound devices and low-pressure plasma also presents problems. The method selected was a combination of various different means, a partial treatment, in particular, based upon the awareness that the aesthetic charm of historic silver works of art does not necessarily lie in a shiny surface.
