The Museum of Castle Arnstadt in Thuringia has a rich collection of Renaissance tapestries from Brussels. One is the fragment, <i>The Stoning of Saint Stephen</i>, only the left quarter of which, minus the border, has been preserved. The damage was extensive, including patches crudely attached to the back, exposed warp threads, cracks, and much soiling. The first step was to prepare a bath of soapwort root extract for cleaning. Cotton thread was used to restore the missing woolen warp threads. The silk and woolen weft threads were replaced with similar thread dyed to match. A mixture of wool fat (Adeps lanae) and benzine for wounds restored the original pliability and natural gloss. A cotton net, such as that used for miners' sweatshirts, turned out to be a suitable carrier material. The picture carpet was sewn onto it and placed into a wooden frame with enough space left between it and the wall for air circulation.
