In around 1760, a silk damask with a symmetrical lace band pattern was woven in Berlin and used as a wall hanging, upholstery, and decoration fabric in Sans Souci Palace. It deteriorated with time and new fabric was made using the old pattern. As a result, there are more than 20 variations, samples of which have been preserved in the fabric collection of the National Palaces and Gardens Sans Souci in Potsdam. They document the development of damask weaving from the mid-18th century to the present. The technical data on the fabric buildup were examined and serve as a basis for dividing the variations into different weave groups. Each of the seven groups is characteristic of a stage of development in silk weaving depending upon the fabric's provenance.
