Abstract
Chrome tanned leather samples were tested at 65%, 75%, and 85% relative humidity and 28°C temperature. Fungal growth appeared after 15 days of incubation at 75% and 85% relative humidity. In all, 14 fungal species were isolated. The leather moisture was found to increase by 12.4-15.2% at 75% relative humidity and by 18-23% at 85% relative humidity after 120 days of storage at 2.5-3.5% initial fat content. Fungal growth also caused reduction in leather chromium content. The in vitro experiments by incorporation of chromium in the medium indicated that fungi could withstand 1.0% concentration of chromium. It was concluded that fungi can deteriorate chrome-tanned leather and its articles in stores, museums, archives, and shops.
